Effective Credit Control for Your Business

Running a business on credit is one of the most professional things you can do, whilst also becoming one of the most risky. As soon as you offer credit to your customers you are opening yourself up for severely late payment, or worse still, no payment at all, which can be crippling for any business. For this reason it is imperative that you maintain strong credit control to minimize the risks to your business without damaging customer relations.

The first line of defense against late and non-payment of credit terms should be to restrict to whom you offer credit. By keeping tight reins over who qualifies for credit from your company, you should be able to weed out the non-payers, late-payers, and those you just can’t trust for whatever reason. This way, you should only have credit offered to proven customers who have paid promptly in the past, which should limit credit problems and cash flow issues from even arising.

If you do happen to come across a customer who hasn’t paid his bill on time, it is good courtesy to send a reminder letter of two first. Make sure the tone isn’t too heavy – there may be a good reason for you not receiving the payment, or the customer might just be running a bit behind. Either way, it’s important that you don’t damage your reputation or your relationship with the customer by simply going straight in there with the legal language. In your reminder notice, politely ask for payment within seven business days, or even fourteen depending on the importance of the customer. If payment still hasn’t appeared after that, it might be time to start raising the tone.

After you’ve sent your reminder letters, it’s time to send a more strongly worded notice. This should ask for payment within five or three working days to avoid further action. If again you receive no response, you should certainly follow this up with a call, stressing the urgency of receiving payment and you intention to take further action to realize your remedy.

Finally, if this yields no results, it’s time to involve the lawyers. A legal letter is very effective at converting late payments, and can be one of the best ways to avoid legal action. Of course, there are legal remedies open to you should this fail to yield the desired result, but by taking these steps first, you should hopefully be able to avoid this eventuality.

Business Dress Code

Working in a stockroom can be a dirty job and someday you hope that your efforts will be noticed and you will get the chance to prove what you can with a promotion into a supervisors role. However, if supervisors watching the operation see everyone dressed for the part of throwing freight around the back room, they will generally place them all in the same category.

Working harder is one way to get promoted but having someone who matters notice your extra work can take a long time and may go unnoticed by those that can make a difference in your future. You will have to find a way to stand out from the rest and wearing stupid hats or loud colorful clothing may attract the wrong type of attention.

If the person in the position you aspire to hold wears a tie to work everyday, then you should start wearing a tie. Yes, there will be times it gets in the way and you may ruin a few ties before someone notices but usually from the first time you dress for the position into which you want to be promoted, people will notice and begin to pay closer attention to the type of work you do.

That said, simply dressing the part may not get you promoted into the position. You should also pay attention to how the job is performed and groom yourself to be ready to step in and take charge if the need arises. If you can do the majority of the work involved in the next position up and dress like you already have the job, theres a better chance of being chosen for promotion.

Many companies tell their supervisors that if they want to be promoted they have to have someone in their charge ready to take their place before they can move up. They may include mentoring in the process to help one or more people they believe could do the job, read that dress for the part and work hard, get ready for a promotion.

It is likely that at some point in your life you have heared the phrase dress for success and even with todays relaxed dress codes in many offices, it remains true. No one is going to try to infringe on your rights to wear what you want to wear, provided it meets an established and consistent dress code but they also can form an opinion of your attitude based on your attire. Fair or not plays no role in the equation.

The fact remains that you are judged by your appearance. In order to be considered for a management or supervisory position, you have to dress like you can command the respect of those you will supervise as well as being taken seriously by customers with whom you may have to interact.

Internet Marketing: A Guide to List Building

There are many methods used to market internet businesses. Among them, one of the best methods is called list building. List building is as simple as its title suggests. It is the concept of building a list of possible visitors to your site. When building your list, you must take into consideration the nature of your site and those who might be related to or take an interest in the subject of your website. For instance, if you have a website on potty training, the foundation of your list should consist of people interested in this subject. For instance, a good example would be mothers with toddlers.

While keeping in mind your primary list of possible potential customers, when building your list, it would be to your advantage to try to broaden the possible visitors. You may do this by thinking of ways to promote your site to people who may not directly be interested in potty training. One way of doing this is to offer possible links to websites with similar subjects. You can exchange links with other sites that may cover similar subject matters. This practice is called link swapping. Obviously, when doing this, you want to steer clear of competing sites, after all, you do not want to give your competition an edge. For instance, keeping with the same example of a potty training website, you may offer links to websites that cover other aspects of motherhood such as taking care of an infant, or bathing your baby. The same process works in reverse, the other websites can include a link to your site and help steer traffic in your direction. By exchanging links with websites such as this you are helping each other bring in a higher volume of traffic.

Internet etiquette is important to practice while list building. People must choose to become part of your list, not the other way around. Your list should always remain confidential. Good internet business practice should always be exercised. Any unsolicited emails can be considered spam and at the very least is considered rude and in most places is illegal. Therefore, always be certain that every member contained in your list opted to be there or you could find yourself in the midst of a legal matter down the line.

Another method of internet marketing is to write articles on the subject of your site and offer them free of charge to websites and forums. Chances are you are an expert on the subject of your site and therefore writing an article should not be too difficult. You should also include a link to your website in the article which can be used as free advertising. You can send your articles to article directories also.

Another little trick is to include your URL with your e mail signature line. By following these simple techniques, your internet business will soon be extemely profitable.
